The uppercut is a devastating punch that has a slew of broken bodies to it name, but a lot of the times this punch is thrown is with poor or just a lack of technical skill applied to it. Its starting to make its way out of the darkness that’s been in since the Tyson area thanks to technical skill being applied to it again. Its my favorite punch because the strength in my core and my legs similar to a Chad Mendes or a small Tyson I love it because of the variation and layering I can achieve with hooks pull counters jabs and pretty much everything else. Anyone can use it variations in all it’s just knowing how to do it I mean Conors got a great one Chad has a booming one Tyson was well Tyson and all the best have their own way of doing it. Throw it in the clinch if you have the over hook, throw it when your felling like changing the levels or setting up another combination.

Rear Uppercut Breakdown

  1. Be it the rear or the lead you’re going to change you elevation meaning bend at the knees.
  2. Drop your shoulder flat, meaning don’t hitch or give a tell because the opponent doesn’t know if a hook or an uppercut or hell the cross is coming.
  3. Twist your torso like you’re throwing a hook.
  4. Know explode upward with the legs.
  5. Driving your fist straight up with little wavering in its path.
  6. Extend through the target by uncorking your torso and driving with your legs, your shoulder, and arm.

Launching a sneaky Lead Uppercut follows the same basics but you add in a few things.

  1. Be it the rear of the lead you’re going to change you elevation meaning bend at the knees.

This is the basic movement breakdown, layering this movement which will become as basic as a hook after time is a way to become a fierce pocket fighter. Look at Mayweather he throws upper cuts form the pocket and that’s a reason guys stop clinching with him because of the speed, followed by subsequent power, and shock off the punch. Variations of it could be the lead blitz uppercut that become popular, or by hiding it behind a take down like Mendes and exploding from the low base like a squat jump with a missile of an uppercut. Riddick Bowes infamous Smash is another way of throwing it coming from the floor with the arm mixing its angle with what looks like a hook to land through a high guard. It’s so versatile and is only capped by your imagination be it with the combination or how you throw it.
